Episode Transcript

In the 1980s, I visited the Soviet Union, and the Constitution there guaranteed a place to live, a living wage, and health care. As far as the living wage is concerned, the Soviet people had a saying, “We pretend to work, they pretend to pay us for it.” A place to live? Young people up into their 40s, lived with their parents, because that was the only place where they could find to live. What about health care? The Soviets walked around with no teeth. They couldn’t get dental care. If they got sick, too bad for them. Now that America has promised health care, you’ve seen what Obamacare has done to this country. What about a living wage? WHO decides what a living wage is? And why would people do anything worthwhile if they were guaranteed an income, no matter how poorly they did it? Living wage? What a stupid, destructive idea.
